Liquorice is a popular confectionery product. Originally made from the roots of a plant of the same name, liquorice has been produced as a sweet since at least the 17th century.
Liquorice was brought to England in the 16th century, but it was not until the 19th century that it became popular as a confectionery item. The first candy made from liquorice was probably Pontefract cakes, which were originally made by nuns in Pontefract Priory in Yorkshire. The recipe for these has been around since at least 1660 and is still being produced today.
In 1824, liquorice sweets were first produced commercially by William Jackson & Sons in Rotherham, England and sold under the name “Gooey Nuts”. Gooey Nuts were sold by weight and were packaged in small paper bags with printed labels on them. In 1885, Jackson’s son William James Jackson invented Liquorice Allsorts for his father’s company. This new product consisted of individually wrapped pieces of different flavours including cherry, lemon and mint as well as black liquorice which had become very popular after Queen Victoria had started eating it regularly while she was pregnant with Prince Edward (who later became King Edward VII).
Liquorice is made from the root of Glycyrrhiza glabra, a plant that grows in Europe and Asia. The liquorice root is dried and ground, then mixed with sugar to form liquorice powder or liquorice sticks.
Liquorice is becoming increasingly popular in modern times for its health benefits, including helping with digestive problems such as diarrhoea and constipation. It also contains antioxidants that help lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels, making it an ideal addition to your diet if you suffer from high blood pressure or cholesterol problems.
